What is a TOWS matrix generator?
A TOWS matrix generator takes a completed SWOT analysis and automatically pairs the quadrants into four strategy sets: SO (strengths plus opportunities), WO (weaknesses plus opportunities), ST (strengths plus threats), and WT (weaknesses plus threats). A SWOT tells you what is true about your position; a TOWS matrix tells you what to do about it.
How to build a TOWS matrix
- 1
Start from a SWOT
Enter a company name, or describe your business in 2-3 sentences. The generator drafts all four SWOT quadrants first, because TOWS is only as good as the SWOT underneath it.
- 2
Pair the quadrants
Each opportunity is matched against your strengths and weaknesses, and each threat against the same, producing the four SO, WO, ST, and WT cells.
- 3
Cut what you cannot evidence
Delete any pairing that rests on a claim you cannot support. A TOWS matrix full of plausible-sounding strategies is worse than a short one that is true.
- 4
Sequence the four cells
Decide which cell you act on first using the sequencing test below. Most TOWS outputs stop at four lists and leave the ordering to you.
